How was the Argentine Navy Day born?

The Argentine Navy Day is celebrated on May 17 to commemorate the national victory over the troops of the Kingdom of Spain in the Naval Combat of Montevideo that took place between May 14 and 17, 1814.

As already mentioned, this triumph marked the end of the dominance of the royalist troops in the Río de la Plata and consequently, the date of its culmination was the one chosen to honor the armed force that protects our Argentine coasts.

This battle was commanded by Guillermo Brown; the first Argentine nationalized Irish admiral of the Argentine naval force. Under his military action, it was possible to put an end to the royal dominion in the waters of the Río de la Plata and allowed the fall of Montevideo. Finally, this city was taken by the Argentine army on June 23, 1814.

In addition to the Naval Combat of Montevideo , with this victory the principles of the May Revolution were also consolidated, finally contributing to the success of the liberation campaigns in Chile and Peru.
