Origin of Archivist's Day
The origin of the Archivist's Day dates back to August 21, 1821 when the governor of the Province of Buenos Aires, Martín Rodríguez, together with his minister, Bernardino Rivadavia, ordered, by means of a decree of law, that the General Archive be created of the Province of Buenos Aires, which was located in the Manzana de las Luces.
This place was created to gather, save and preserve all the public archives existing at that time in the city of Buenos Aires, from the day it was founded to date.
After the federalization of Buenos Aires in 1880, this body was renamed as it currently does and was moved to the building where the old National Congress had previously operated. At present, the AFIP is located there and in 1950, the General Archive was moved to where it is currently located on Alem 246 avenue.
The documents that the archive gathers goes from the colonial period to the present day. The documentary collection “Virreinato del Río de la Plata” has been recognized by UNESCO as “Memory of the World”.
