How was the National Culture Day born?
It was through a presidential decree of 1982 that July 29 was instituted as the National Culture Day . This date was instituted in commemoration of the death of the writer, as well as teacher, politician and historian, Ricardo Rojas.
The decree that establishes this date reads that: “Culture, an essential expression of man, defines and identifies peoples, those who transcend thanks to its development, preservation and dissemination. It is convenient to determine a day in which the values of our culture should especially be remembered, a day in which the work carried out in the consolidation and promotion of the National Culture can be evaluated annually. "
As for Ricardo Roja, the same document states that he “represents very uniquely, in his multifaceted and deep intellectual personality, various cultural manifestations and embodies an Argentine concern to preserve and spread the characteristics of the national culture. The first National Congress of Directors of Argentine Culture, held in Buenos Aires in September 1957, chose his figure as a man from the interior, defender of the national essence and promoter of letters, arts and sciences, evoking his memory as a guide in his deliberations.
