Origin of National Dog Day

The National Dog Day has been celebrated since 1996 and has its origin in the history of Chonino , or rather, in a tragic but heroic event executed by him.

Chonino was a German sheepdog who was born in 1975 and was part of the Federal Police Dog Division since December 1977. Chonino was intelligent and understood quickly, so he became part of the security operation in the opening match of the World Cup. 1978, which was played at the Monumental stadium between Germany and Poland. Chonino worked with NCO Luis Sibert and agent Jorge Iani.

On June 2, 1938, while these three were doing a routine patrol around Villa Devoto, they visualized two suspects on Avenida General Paz y Lastra. When Sibert and Lani requested their documents, the suspects fired at the police officers, wounding Sibert and Iani.

Upon realizing this, Chonino threw himself on the criminals, ripping the pocket of his jacket, while the other criminal shot the dog in the chest, which crawled towards Sibert and died beside him.

Chinico's sacrifice served to save Sibert's life, who after a long recovery left the aftermath of the shot behind. Iani, sadly, did not survive. This is the story for which Argentina celebrates the National Dog Day on June 2.
