Origin of the National Day of Latin American Freedom
The National Day of Latin American Freedom is celebrated on June 17 in memory of the anniversary of the death of Martín Miguel de Güemes in 1821 after several days of suffering and agony.
Güemes is one of the men who built the independence of our country and fought against the advance of the Spanish troops. He is remembered as the Hero of National Liberation.
Martín Miguel de Güemes, entered the military career at age 14 and participated in the defense of the city of Buenos Aires during the invasion of the English. After the May Revolution, he joined the army and was part of the troops in Suipacha. Later he would collaborate on the Montevideo site.
In 1815 he returned to Salta, his hometown, and led the resistance to the royalists. That same year he was elected as governor until 1820. A year later, on June 2, 1821, he was wounded in an ambush executed by the Spanish.
Days after being agonizing and dying, he died on June 17, 1821 . Currently his remains rest in the Pantheon of Las Glorias del Norte in the Cathedral of Salta.
